How to claim Bitcoin Cash on Ledger Nano S

You might have heard about the mighty ‘fork’ in Bitcoin on 1 August 2017. The fork led to the creation of a new cryptocurrency, Bitcoin Cash. The coin is also known as Bcash with the symbols BCH or BCC. If you wish to read more about this latest crypto currency, you can read about it here. I am sure like many others, you are interested in getting your hands on Bitcoin Cash. So let me explain how I claimed the currency. You can follow these simple steps to claim Bitcoin Cash on Ledger Nano S. I do not need to remind you, the Ledger Nano S is my favourite hardware wallet.

Lets begin then.  A small caveat, you can only claim Bitcoin Cash, if you had Bitcoins stored in the Ledger Nano S at approximately 14:00 UTC on 1 August 2017.

Quick Steps to Claim Bitcoin Cash on Ledger Nano S

  1. Install the Ledger Manager app on your Chrome browser.
  2. Install the Bitcoin Cash app on your Ledger Nano S
  3. Open the Bitcoin Wallet that you had installed on your Chrome browser.
  4. Change the Blockchain to use.
  5. Select your Wallet type.
  6. Congrats! You are the proud owner of the latest cryptocurrency.

Detailed Steps

Let me elaborate on these steps in this section.

    1. Install the Ledger Manager app on your Chrome browse.In the event that you have not installed the Ledger Manager app, please do that. Visit the Ledger Manager section on the Ledger website and click on Install.Install_Ledger_ManagerThis will bring up the Chrome store, where you can add the Ledger Wallet to Chrome.
    2. Install the Bitcoin Cash app on your Ledger Nano S
      Connect your Ledger Nano S to the computer using the supplied USB cable. Open the Ledger Manager app. You can type ‘chrome://apps/‘ in the Chrome address bar and you will find the Ledger Manager app. Find the Bitcoin Cash app and install it by clicking the Green arrow next to its name.Ledger Manager Bitcoin CashThis will install the Bitcoin Cash app on your Ledger Nano S. You will be asked to confirm the installation on the device. Please confirm that.
    3. Open the Bitcoin Wallet that you had installed on your Chrome device.
      On the Ledger Nano S device, open the newly installed Bitcoin Cash app. Then close Ledger Manager app and open the Ledger Wallet Bitcoin.
    4. Change the Blockchain to use.
      You must then choose the Settings menu in the Ledger Wallet Bitcoin app. In the Settings pop-up, click on Blockchains.Ledger Nano-S SettingsA new window will show up, wherein you can choose the Blockchain that you wish to open. For our scenario, click on Bitcoin Cash.

    5. Select your Wallet type.
      Another window will pop up that will let you decide if you wish to choose Main or Split. If you choose Main, then you will be utilising the same blockchain as your existing Bitcoin currency. If you choose Split, a new address will be created for you on the new blockchain.Bitcoin Cash Main or Split
    6. Congrats! You are the proud owner of the latest cryptocurrency.
      Here is what I did. I opened the Split wallet. I clicked on Receive in the top menu. Copied the address. Then I opened the Main wallet where I found the exact amount of Bitcoin Cash (BCH) as I had Bitcoin (BTC).

Conclusion

You are eligible for the same number of Bcash coins (BCH/BCC) as the Bitcoins you had. The coins are available for you at any time. The price of Bitcoin Cash was nearly $600 when I wrote the article. Bitcoin Cash had the the 3rd largest market cap, eclipsing Ripple and Litecoin. You can move your BCash to an exchange of your choice and begin trading. Many exchanges are offering supporting to BCash. The future of BCash is still very uncertain for now. Who knows, if you HODL BCash it could do wonders to your portfolio similar to its cousin, Bitcoin.
